Driving Ground Rod SPT Sampler Standard Penetration Test Equipment
SPT Drive Rods are manufactured to connect with the SPT Split Tube
Sampler and comply with the BS 1377: Part 9: 1990.
The rod O.D. is 54 mm with solid 1-1/2" B.S. Whitworth male and
female tool joints on each end. The tool joints are friction
welding with the Rods and has a pair of spanner flats to facilitate
handling.
The rod weighs only 8.8 kg per meter but is both stronger and
stiffer. It has four kinds of standard lengths, like 3.0m, 1.5m,
1.0m and 0.75m.
The Automatic Trip Hammer comprises following parts:
a) A weight made of steel and provided with an axial hole with a
diameter which is 3 mm to 4 mm larger than that of the guide rod.
It is of 63.5 kg.
b) A pick-up and release mechanism to ensure that the weight has a
free fall of 760 mm and shall not influence the acceleration and
deceleration of the weight or the rods.
c) An inner guide shaft to permit the weight to drop with minimal
resistance, and to ensure the weight strikes the anvil squarely.
d) An anvil made of steel with an integral threaded portion to
connect squarely and rigidly on to the top of the uppermost
extension rod.

The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and Cone Penetrometer Test
(CPT) have become industry standards for subsurface geotechnical
investigations using small diameter (<8-in. [20-cm]) borings and
soundings. Both procedures have evolved over a period of 100 and 70
years, respectively, and have been adopted as ASTM standards. Each
procedure has certain advantages over the other, but both can
elicit incorrect data under particular subsurface conditions that
are often overlooked, depending on the experience of field
personnel operating or logging the tests. This paper seeks to
explain the operative assumptions employed in both procedures,
highlight the various corrections that are commonly employed, and
warn the reader of common errors in interpretation.
The article concludes by stating that, under most conditions, the
joint employment of SPT and CPT together has the greatest potential
for characterizing sites correctly.
