Product introduction:
Tricone bit Included Steel Tooth (also referred to as milled tooth)
bits and Tungsten Carbide Insert (TCI) bits, TCI bits are much more
durable than Steel Tooth ones, but carry a higher cost to
manufacture.
Both these two groups of Tricone Bits are available with
(1) Open Bearing or Sealed Bearing
(2) Roller Bearing or Friction Bearing (Journal Bearing)
(3) Gage Protected or Non-Gage Protected, etc
Mill tooth tricone drill bits have very high drilling rates in soft
formations.
Drilling Tools can hard face the milled teeth so that they sharpen
themselves while drilling.
Milled tooth tricone bits are designed for very soft to medium
hardness formations.
Open Bearing mill tooth Tri-Cone roller cone bit can come with or
without gauge protection.
These are less expensive than sealed bearing but they typically do
not last as long.
Sealed Bearing mill tooth tri cone bit with or without gauge
protection
These are the best preforming and longest lasting style of tri cone
on the market.
Guage protection increases the life of the drill bit.

To simplify tricone bit selection, ProDrill Products follows the
IADC bit classification system.
The IADC Code describes a tricone bit, explaining the bit type
(steel tooth and tungsten carbide insert), the formation(s), etc.
All ProDrill tricone bits the above are manufactured according to
strict standards set forth by the American Petroleum Institute
(API).
Tricones and PDC Bits are classified according to characteristics
set forth by the International Association of Drilling Contractors
(IADC).
IADC Codes - Tricone Rock Bits
IADC Codes are designed to make it easier for drillers to describe
what kind of rock bit they are looking for to the supplier.

The first three digits classify the bit according to the formation
it is designed to drill and the bearing/seal design used.
Bit Type and Hardness of Formation to be Drilled.
First Digit:
1, 2, and 3 steel tooth bits (from softest to hardest).
4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 tungsten carbide insert bits (from softest to
hardest).
Second Digit:
from softest (1) to hardest (9).
